Correct grammar is “If I were” a candy bar, I would be… A Hersey’s pure milk chocolate bar.
What is your life bible verse? That is a tough one for me. There is not just one verse for me. Depending on what is going on I look for different ones to encourage me. One verse that is ever so prevalent in my life right now is: Proverbs 22:7 (New International Version) “7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”
I have just finished Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and my wife and I are trying to get out of debt.
How did you end up in radio? I started my official radio career at WFOS through the Chesapeake Public School System when I was 13-years-old. I received my commercial broadcast license from the FCC and a pair of Radio Shack NOVA 40 headphones on my 14th birthday. I am not sure where my license is, I still have the headphones and they work great. In the 17 or so years I have been doing this I have been in and out of the business in different capacities. My last full time radio job was as the assistant director of operations for Westwood One’s Metro Networks division. I served the Norfolk and Richmond markets. I handled a lot of stuff from covering live sports to writing & reporting news for both markets. I was also reporting traffic for both markets as well. I have been up and down the dial on the AM and FM band a lot in my time on the radio.
What do you do with your free time? Free time? What is this free time that you speak of? I love to go to the mountains and the outer banks when I can. I really like a good movie in a THX certified theater. I also work with the youth and singles at church as well. I am also leading a modified version of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. FPU has changed my life. I suggest that you check it out. www.daveramsey.com
The One Thing that Positive Hit Christian Radio The Current Listeners DO NOT know about you… I was the nerd of Great Bridge High school during my time there. With that distinction came a lot of people making fun of me. My had a very low since of self-esteem for a very long time because of it. It was my faith and my few friends that helped me rise about that. However those days haunted me after high school. It took me a little while to come into my own in my adult life. I almost had to grow into who I am now from the age of 17 into my early 20′s. It took a lot of prayer and faith to get through that time. I was not comfortable in my own skin so to speak. During that time in my early adult life God revealed to me that I am who he wanted me be and he has a plan for me. I know that I am the person that HE made. He showed me that I needed to see past how things were in the past and not worry or dwell on it any longer. Because HE holds the future and the past was in the past. My experiences in high school helped me to become a stronger person and good mentor to those who have gone through some of the same stuff I did. It hurts me to see how kids treat other kids these days. And I think it is a lot worse now than it was when I went through school. God prepares you to serve in ways that you can never imagine. My advice to the youth in my church has always been to pray for strength and patience in those times that you are under fire from those around you. Believe it or not God is molding and shaping you in any situation, good or bad. Because God has great plans for you in his Kingdom.
Why don’t you say your name on the air that much? Annie V. of The Current taught me something very important about serving in ministry in 1998. She said what you do in ministry is not about you, it’s about God. You are working for God so let God’s work shine and God be praised, not you. It’s not popularity and fame that I am seeking. I am trying to show the glory of God. In commercial radio it is about shameless self promotion. There came a point during my time in commercial radio that I stopped saying my name. And it did not bother me. What peace I felt because at that point in the my radio career I had paid my dues so to speak and have not gotten very far. It was at that point that God took control of that aspect of my life. He took me in directions that I did not expect. And I have not looked back since. I am excited to see what is to come. Isn’t it amazing what God can do when you walk with him and not against him.
